The setting

The losleben team was running into a project peak: a major new section about to go live, and at the same time several colleagues left or needed extended leave. The release was too close to postpone.

My role

Reinforcement on short notice. The brief was to self-onboard, take load off the engineers still in the room, and not cost the team runway it didn’t have.

The calls that mattered

  • Self-onboarding without blocking anyone: reading the codebase, the board, and the release setup instead of booking clarification calls.
  • Picking up the tasks that unblocked others first.
  • Introducing no discussions about new patterns mid-crisis. Just take the pressure off.

How it ended

The new section went live in its window and the team came out the other side with its release calendar intact.

This is what the “Senior iOS Engineer Just Left” engagement looks like in practice. Time-bounded, low-risk to engage, high-relief to the team. And exactly the situation that recurs more often than any team likes to admit.
